Thijs van Herpt
Post doc
Dr Thijs van Herpt is an internist-intensivist at Maastricht UMC+. He trained in internal medicine at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam and obtained his PhD on type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome.
His research focusses on cardiovascular critical care and metabolic monitoring in critically ill patients. He is particularly interested in dysglycaemia, sodium and fluid balance, and metabolic disturbances as markers of physiology, organ dysfunction and response to treatment. Rather than studying these abnormalities in isolation, his work aims to understand what they reveal about the changing physiology of the critically ill patient.
As a member of the Shock and Mechanical Support Team, he has a particular interest in severe circulatory failure, cardiac surgery and mechanical circulatory support. A central theme is the interaction between haemodynamics and metabolism, and how bedside monitoring can help translate complex physiological changes into clinically meaningful information.
Pharmacology and toxicology form an important complementary research line. In close collaboration with the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Toxicology, he works on questions related to therapeutic drug monitoring, altered pharmacokinetics during critical illness, drug exposure, toxicity and treatment response.
He is also involved in the HumanICare programme, studying outcomes beyond ICU survival, including pre-admission health, recovery, functioning and quality of life. His research is deliberately embedded in daily ICU practice and strongly multidisciplinary. ICU nurses play an important role in this approach, combining continuous bedside observation with detailed knowledge of changes in physiology and treatment response.
His ambition is to develop pragmatic, clinically embedded research in which cardiovascular physiology, metabolism, pharmacology and bedside observation come together. The aim is to better understand the critically ill patient and to translate that understanding into more precise and meaningfu
