New treatment for metabolic disease
CARIM researchers Martijn Brouwers, Amée Buziau, Jean Scheijen, Casper Schalkwijk, Steven Meex have been involved in a study that tested a drug that may help with hereditary fructose intolerance, a rare metabolic disorder. Patients normally have to follow a strict diet because even small amounts of fruit sugar can be harmful. However, with the drug, they were able to tolerate fruit sugar without experiencing any symptoms. The researchers now want to further investigate whether the drug works in the long term and whether it allows patients to consume all foods containing fruit sugar.
