Dr Elham Bidar appointed as PI

As of 1 June 2025, Dr Elham Bidar (Department of CTC) has been appointed as Principal Investigator (PI) within CARIM.

Cardiothoracic surgery stands at the core of translational research, building on its pioneering legacy in organ protection techniques using cardiopulmonary bypass, and innovative interventions that have revolutionised cardiovascular care. From cutting edge robot assisted and minimally invasive procedures like hybrid AF/VT ablation and mitral valve repair to highly complex open aortic procedures and mechanical circulatory support for heart and lung failure, the PI group aims to leverage cardiac surgery as a safe in vivo model for cardiovascular disease. Close collaborations with basic scientists such as dept. of Biochemistry, Physiology and Biomedical Engineering, enables accelarating the translation of lab discoveries into meaningful therapies for vascular, cardiac, and circulatory diseases.

Elham succeeds Prof. Jos Maessen, who has taken on the role of titular board member within the Executive Board of Maastricht UMC+ as 1 January 2025.
