A daily glass of soda increases the risk of high blood pressure by almost one-third.

New research from Maastricht UMC+, published in Clinical Nutrition, shows that the form in which you consume fruit sugar matters. People who drink a glass of soda every day have a 29% higher risk of high blood pressure. The same amount of fruit sugar from actual fruit does not have this effect. Most people hardly notice high blood pressure, but it can have harmful consequences and, in the long term, lead to a heart attack or stroke.

The team led by Prof. Martijn Brouwers (Dept of Internal Medicine) discovered that the “packaging” of fruit sugar is crucial. In fruit, fruit sugar is enclosed in fibers and antioxidants that slow down its absorption. So it’s not just the amount of fruit sugar that matters, but also where it comes from.
