Maarten Snoeijs

Maarten Snoeijs' main clinical and scientific interests are vascular access surgery and kidney transplantation. In addition, he is trained as a clinical epidemiologist. Maarten has been the clinical lead of the vascular access program at the department of vascular surgery of Maastricht UMC+ since 2018. With a multidisciplinary team of vascular surgeons, nephrologists, interventional radiologists, and dialysis nurses, they introduced several surgical innovations (e.g. endovascular arteriovenous fistulas and biodegradable vascular grafts) to expand treatment options for patients with vascular access problems referred to Maastricht UMC+. This has strengthened the position as the national referral centre for vascular access surgery.

In addition to Maarten his clinical and scientific work, he am involved in educational activities to promote vascular access care. He is the chair of the educational committee of the international Vascular Access Society, the course director of the vascular access programme of the annual European Vascular Course, and leads the vascular access surgery theme of the national training and assessment course for vascular surgery residents. Finally, Maarten contributes to several national and international clinical practice guidelines on vascular access surgery.

Maarten his research is focused on vascular access for hemodialysis and includes the following themes:

·         Pragmatic multicentre randomised controlled trials. This research theme has immediate impact on vascular access care. The OASIS trial studies the best type of vascular access for elderly patients starting hemodialysis treatment, and the FLOW trial studies the best strategy for follow-up and treatment of vascular access stenosis.

·         Biology of vascular remodelling. This research theme intends to understand the biology of venous outward remodelling and intimal hyperplasia after arteriovenous fistula creation using human tissue and mouse models. This research is done with the department of pathology at Maastricht UMC+ (Prof. Andrew Baker and Prof. Judith Sluimer) and the departments of nephrology and surgery at LUMC (prof. Joris Rotmans and dr. Margreet de Vries).

·         Hemodynamic consequences of arteriovenous fistulas. This research theme intends to study the hemodynamic consequences of vascular access surgery by computational modelling. Patient-specific hemodynamic modelling is used to create digital twins that support decision making in vascular access creation (Shunt Simulation Study) and thrombosis prevention (ThromboRisk doctoral network). This research is done with the department of biomedical engineering at TU/e and MUMC+ (prof. Wouter Huberts and prof. Tammo Delhaas).
