In this multidisciplinary environment we seek an experienced, broad-based Pharmacologist/ Biochemist who is willing to advance the field of metabolism of food ingredients, and has an established reputation in solving problems in the area of biochemical metabolism. The ideal candidate should have hands-on expertise in target and pathway analysis and a strong experimental molecular and cellular biology technical skill set.
Main job purpose:
You will have a shared responsibility to initiate and manage new research that ensures the continuity of our scientific capability and which will generate new ideas and longer-term opportunities for our business. You will manage Unilever contributions to internal and external research projects and collaborations, and represent Unilever to key external researchers. Within pre-clinical research you will take responsibility for identification and verification of molecular and cellular targets. In this you will closely and frequently interact with experts from other areas. You will frequently discuss and align research activities with the Science Leaders and fellow Research Scientists to generate experimental roadmaps for early stage testing.
In your job you will be responsible to:
- Develop and implement new experimental models, establish new techniques, initiate, execute and manage lab bench work and take prime responsibility to raise our technical skill set;
- Guide, supervise and develop technical staff;
- Design, plan and conduct experiments to understand mode of action of new leads and to
identify molecular targets in the selected benefit areas;
- Build, together with experts from other areas, molecular & integrative physiology expertise and strategic approaches to ensure fast progression of pre- clinical leads into clinical testing;
- Assess internal and external scientific developments and evaluate their business relevance;
- Represent internally and externally the expertise group and the science parts of the project involved with.
Specific tasks are:
- •Perform a systematic review of strategic and project needs for pathway analysis using ‘Omics’ data for selected benefit areas;
- Develop scientific strategies and establish experimental models to track down targets using database mining, state-of-the-art molecular and cellular techniques such as antisense and small RNAs.
- Establish as internal leader in the field of pathway analysis. Devise experiments that lead to insight in this area and supervise execution. Strengthen and consolidate existing internal expertise and align activities across different R&D sites;
- Interface with existing collaboration on metabolism modeling;
- Actively establish collaborations, build network with external partners in the pre-competitive
area, and maintain contact with academic partners in this field;
- Interact directly in multidisciplinary project teams with experts in analytical chemistry, physiology, molecular biology, genomics, and safety & toxicology.
Job requirements:
- PhD, with post-doctoral experience (4-6 years), in Pharmacology, Biochemistry or other relevant life science discipline;
- High affinity for lab bench work and a proven expertise in establishing several molecular and cellular experimental models using state-of-the-art techniques as well as a solid understanding and interest for biochemical and signaling pathways, particularly in the cardio metabolic area is crucial;
- A track record that demonstrates relevant experience, innovate thinking in problem solving in biological systems plus related academic publications needs to be demonstrated;
- An active external network that allows new developments in the area to be integrated rapidly and provide contact with potential consultants is required;
- Good communication skills at a professional level (English) as well as effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work in teams across disciplines is essential in our work environment.

For this multidisciplinary environment we are looking for a Research Scientist (PhD) Bioavailability & L-ADMER with a track record in bioavailability & ADME, with particular interest in applying relevant physiological models.
Main job purpose:
You will develop, coordinate and deliver scientific strategies and studies to evaluate Unilever leads, mainly in the pre-clinical discovery stage. This includes in particular designing, executing and interpreting bioavailability & L-ADMER studies. You will further address formulation aspects of food ingredients and their impact on bioavailability related issues and provide technical leadership in the area.
More specifically, you will
- Be involved in bioavailability aspects of food ingredients and understanding their liberation, absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion processes, including modeling;
- Translate project objectives and scientific insights into research proposals in the area of bioavailability & L-ADMER with short and long-term scope (designing/executing in-vivo and in- vitro studies incl. lab bench work);
- Be involved as scientist in several benefit-driven discovery projects, particularly responsible for bioavailability aspects of compounds;
- Assess internal and external scientific developments and evaluate their business relevance. Tasks:
- Initiate, design, execute, analyze, interpret, report and present (internally and externally) results of bioavailability & ADME related aspects of natural products;
- Extent our expertise and capabilities in the area of bioavailability & ADME of natural components, in particular address formulation questions;
- Establish collaborations with external partners in the pre-competitive area and maintain contacts with academic partners in this field;
- Generate solutions that can be protected by patenting;
- Interact directly in research projects with multidisciplinary teams such as analytical chemistry, formulation science, physiology and safety & toxicology to bring discovery candidates into the clinical research phase.
Job requirements:
- PhD, preferably with post-doctoral experience (1-3 years), in pharmacology, bio- pharmaceutics, Physiology;
- Experience with bioavailability and ADME models as well as pharmacokinetic analysis and interpretation is a prerequisite;
- We seek a scientist with high affinity for lab bench work and affinity with formulation design would be a plus;
Good communication skills at a professional level (English) as well as effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work in teams across disciplines is required.

In this multidisciplinary environment we seek a Research Scientist (PhD) Epithelial Transport with a track record in cellular biology, with particularly strong hands-on expertise in various epithelial transport models.
Main job purpose:
You will develop, coordinate and deliver scientific strategies and studies to evaluate Unilever leads, mainly in the pre-clinical research phase stage. This includes development and validation of appropriate in vitro and ex vivo models. You will provide technical leadership in the area, establish new techniques, and initiate, execute and manage lab-bench work. Further, you will contribute to develop pre-clinical mode of action models in the cardiovascular and metabolic health area to build clinical hypotheses driven, early clinical research.
More specifically, you will:
- be involved as scientist in several benefit-driven discovery projects, particularly responsible for bioavailability aspects of compounds;
- Design, manage, and implement scientific research strategies in accordance with the project goals;
- Translate project objectives and scientific insights into research proposals (incl. grant proposals) with short and long-term scope;
- Assess internal and external scientific developments and evaluate their business relevance. Specific tasks are:
- Initiate, design, execute (incl. lab bench work), analyze, interpret and report results of research activities on transepithelial transport and ADME related aspects of natural products;
- Contribute to development of mechanistic roadmaps in selected benefit areas;
- Present internally and externally the science part of the project involved with

Project: The role of the complement system in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Job description
In this project, financially supported by the Maag Lever Darm Stichting, the role of the complement system in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) will be studied. The aims are to attenuate NAFLD by inhibition of the complement system and to identify triggers of complement activation. This will be done by experiments with C3 knockout mice and liver biopsies of obese subjects with or without NAFLD. A broad variety of analytical and molecular biological techniques will be applied.
We offer an experienced, collaborative, and international group of colleagues and an excellent infrastructure in which translation of animal data to the clinical setting is common.
Requirements
We are looking for a creative, well organized, and independent junior postdoc with a strong interest in metabolic disease and immunity. Experience in laboratory animal handling (Article 9 or 12), and with molecular, biochemical, and cell biological techniques is required. Good written and oral expression skills are expected.
Conditions of employment
Temporary full time (38 hr) employment for 2 years, starting before December 1st, 2010.
