  Profile

Dr. Slaaf studied Experimental Physics at the University of Utrecht, where he graduated in 1972. He obtained his Ph.D. in Electrophysiology from the same university in 1977. He joined the Department of Biophysics at Universiteit Maastricht in 1975, was appointed associate professor of Biophysics in 1979, and professor of Physics of the Microcirculation in 1997. Dr. Slaaf was actively involved in the development of the Microcirculation program in the laboratory and the clinic. Presently, he is developing the application of imaging using two-photon lifetime microscopy to vital cells and in vivo in collaboration with Dr. M.A.M.J. van Zandvoort. He was a visiting professor at several international universities. In 1991 he was appointed adjunct full professor at the University of Louisville, KY, U.S.A. He is the author or co-author of over 200 papers and book chapters. He is a member of the Dutch, European, German and American Microcirculatory Societies, the Dutch and American Physiological Societies, the European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering & Sciences (EAMBES; vice-chair Academic Division) and president of the Dutch Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering. He is professor of Vital Microscopy and Imaging at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering (BME) of the Eindhoven University of Technology. He is responsible for the integration of vital imaging research of CARIM and BME.
