Dr. Kroon obtained his MD degree at the University of Nijmegen in 1984. He was trained in Internal Medicine at the St. Maartens Gasthuis in Venlo and at the St. Radboud University Hospital of Nijmegen and qualified as specialist in Internal Medicine in 1990. During the following years of clinical practice, he was involved in the hyperlipoproteinemia research program in Nijmegen. At the same university he received his PhD in 1996 on the basis of studies on LDL-apheresis: ‘Aggressive cholesterol lowering and regression of atherosclerosis’. Since 1995 he is a staff member of Internal Medicine at the University Hospital of Maastricht and his main clinical interest is Vascular Medicine. He is registered vascular medicine specialist and clinical pharmacologist. His present interest in research concerns hypertension, especially renovascular hypertension and genetics of hypertension. Currently he is the first president of the Dutch Society of Vascular Internal Medicine (‘Internistisch Vasculair Genootschap’) and treasures of the Dutch Hypertension Society. He is also member of the European Council for Cardiovascular Research, the Dutch Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Biopharmacy, and the Dutch Atherosclerosis Society.
