Dr. Cleutjens studied Biology at the Agricultural University of Wageningen, where he graduated in 1985. He obtained his PhD in Pathology at Universiteit Maastricht in 1989 with a thesis on basement membrane heterogeneity. He did a postdoctoral training program at the department of Pathology at Universiteit Maastricht (1990-1994). In the mean time he spent a postdoctoral year with Dr. K.T. Weber at the division of Cardiology, department of Internal Medicine, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, USA (1992-1993). Since 1994 he became a staff member of the department of Pathology of Universiteit Maastricht. His research interest is the regulation of extracellular matrix turnover and angiogenesis in the heart after myocardial infarction and in the atherosclerotic vessel wall.
