Dr. Lutgens studied Medicine at Maastricht University Medical School, where she graduated cum laude in 2001. In 1996, she enrolled an MD-PhD program at the department of Pathology and Cardiology at Maastricht University and the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM) and obtained her PhD in 2001 (cum laude) on the basis of a thesis on inflammatory mechanisms in atherosclerosis. During her MD-PhD appointment, she worked short periods at the lab of Prof. P. Carmeliet in Leuven, and at the lab of Dr. V. Koteliansky (Biogen, Cambridge, MA, USA) and Prof. R. Flavell (Yale Medical school, New Haven, CT, USA). In 2002-2003 she completed post-doctoral research fellowships at the Vascular Medicine dept. at the Brigham’s and women’s hospital/ Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA, USA and at the Angiogenesis Research Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center / Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, NH, USA. She continued her post-doctoral fellowship at the dept. of Pathology in Maastricht (Dr. E. Dekker fellowship, NHS and VENI fellowship, NWO) and started her residency in pathology in 2004 at the University Hospital in Maastricht. Her present research interests focuses on the role of inflammation and the immune system in atherosclerosis development and progression, with special interest on the CD40-CD40L system.
