In the research program we have followed the different phases of a vessel wall as it starts to develop (Theme IIIa: Vascular development/angiogenesis), adapts to the changing conditions of normal life (Theme IIIb: Vascular Model and Remodeling), is predisposed to disease by genetic and environmental influences (Theme IIIc: Predisposition to vascular disease), gets occluded and induces ischemia in end-organs (Theme IIId: Mechanisms of vascular occlusion) and induces vascular disease (Theme IIIe: Vascular Medicine).
Each of the 5 themes encloses 2-3 programs, which should be considered as working units, each with its own principal investigator (see also the overview).
Although we have "split" the Vascular Biology research in area III into 5 themes that include some 11 programs, it is not our purpose to hamper new initiatives of collaboration between investigators involved in vascular biology or in one of the other research areas of CARIM. Rather we hope that this new structure will help to focus and will stimulate new initiatives and collaborations, also between programs, themes and research areas.
