Free University of Amsterdam

There are long-standing scientific contacts between the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM) of the Maastricht University and the Institute for Cardiovascular Research (ICaR) of the Free University of Amsterdam, also a research institute under the Dutch University Act (WWO, 1986) with a structure similar to that of CARIM. The cooperation has a positive influence on the quality of the research and the PhD programs. Since the recognition by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, CARIM and ICaR closely collaborate in a Research School on Cardiovascular Diseases. top

Eindhoven University of Technology

In 1991 the Boards of Governors of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE) and the Maastricht University entered into a formal agreement of cooperation, setting the seal on a cooperation regarding the various aspects of cardiovascular research which has already lasted for over 15 years. The research collaboration focusses on three areas of mutual interest:
a. biomolecular targeting and bioinformatics;
b. biomedical imaging and signalling;
c. biomechanics and tissue engineering.

The collaboration between CARIM and TUE has been further intensified due to the new undergraduate program on Biomedical Technology, the students following this program participate in CARIM's research program in the last year of their training.
The collaboration will get a further impulse in the near future by the execution of the program' Molecular Imaging'. CARIM and TUE/Biomedical Technology applied with success for a so-called BSIK grand in 2003. Besides CARIM en TUE, Philips and Organon will also participate in this substantial research program. top

Other universities

On a more incidental basis CARIM investigators collaborate with scientists from almost all other universities in the Netherlands. A NWO genomics program grant was awarded for a research program on atherosclerosis performed by groups in Leiden (T. van Berkel), Amsterdam Medical Center (H. Pannekoek) and CARIM (M. Daemen). top

ICIN

CARIM has close ties with the Interuniversity Cardiology Institute of the Netherlands, (ICIN). CARIM is participating in ICIN's coordination program. top

International Cooperation

Right from CARIM's inception, its management has recognized the im portance of promoting cooperation with institutes abroad. This policy has led to close contacts between CARIM and many other institutes in Europe and the United States. CARIM has formalized its international collaboration with the Institut Féderative de Recherche Cardiovasculaire Lariboisière in Paris. An agreement for collaboration was signed in 2001 with the University of Edinburgh. This agreement strengthens a long-term existing collaboration with the Center for Transgene Research of this Uni versity. CARIM participates in seve ral Wellcome Trust funded British genomic research consortia. As much as the financial means allow, staff members and researchers are regularly posted abroad to learn new techniques and gain new experience, which can then be implemented in CARIM's research program after their return to Maastricht.
At their own or CARIM's request, visiting researchers from foreign institutes come to Maastricht for extended working visits, and each year various researchers come to spend their sabbaticals at our institute. The cooperation often leads to joint publications, and if the contacts are very close there may even be staff exchanges in the form of, for instance, 'affiliate professorships'. At present the following affiliate professors have been appointed:
. Prof. J.B. Bassingthwaighte, University of Washington, Center for Bio engineering;
. Prof. Y. Nemerson, Mount Sinaï School of Medicine, New York;
. Prof. A.J. Schroit, Anderson Cancer Center, Houston;
. Prof. A. Bonen, University of Waterloo, Department of Kinesiology, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
. Prof. P. Carmeliet, University of Leuven, Belgium.
. Prof. M. Safar, University of Paris, France.

Foreign scientists, mostly post doctoral fellows visiting CARIM for research training, as well as visiting scientists of collaborating institutes, participated in the CARIM activities in 2004. top
